Among the many accessories imported by MATEBA ITALY,dedicated to the cleaning, cure, maintenance and customization of different types of weapons, there are some of their products (of their production) pretty interesting.
One of these attractive product is this “Whispering Spring” dedicated to the AR-15 Platform.
This spring is an alternative proposal to the traditional buffer and spring system which eliminate noises and vibrations during the firing cycle of the weapon.
With the ”Whispering Spring”, the classic metallic sound “sproing”,caused by the spring of the rifle during the firing cycle, much loved by ”Eugene Stoner’s system fetishists” is completely eliminated! Moreover, also the rubbings, caused by the Buffer Spring of the rifle are eliminated.
The new Buffer is composed of a recoil spring (made of steel),the resetting spring and,at the end,by a ”Ring buffer” in which leans a bushing (made of Teflon) and,on the opposite side, the real Buffer (obviously made of steel) interspersed with O-Rings made of Rubber.
If we look more closely we’ll notice that the Buffer consists in sliding bushings (Made of Brass and turned with the lathe) and three cylinders which composing the central body of the system.
Between the cylinders there are some O-Rings which are used to separate and amortize the recoil of the gun and also, for a better sliding. The entire system runs on a recoil spring guide (made of stainless steel).
How does it work?
The Whispering Spring must be insert into the tube instead of the original buffer and has the function to counteract the reactions during the firing cycle and to guarantee the rearmament of the weapon avoiding chafing and vibrations due to the sliding of the spring and the original buffer inside the tube. The Recoil spring guide is locked at the back of the buffer. During the firing cycle, the Bolt carrier pushses against the new buffer which moves back through the recoil spring guide.
The spring is compressed until the end of the rearward movement and then, discharged itself during the rearmament. The back of the bolt carrier runs backwards around the recoil spring guide.
Inside the Kit,there’s a second thick (Made of Teflon) if we want to install it on Buffer Tubes of ”Rifle” Type.
To assemble the new buffer we have to remove the original buffer (with the spring) and replace it with the new one. Obviously, we must assemble the Whispering Spring correctly to avoid the blocking of the weapon:
The portion of the buffer Made in Teflon must be placed in the back of the tube while the Metal one in the front of it. As all the mechanical parts, the springs of this system, may be subjected to damage over the years and….for this reason we suggest to lubricate the buffer tube with specific gun oils, and in some cases we can also use a little bit of grease for guns.
The ”whispering spring” buffer is contained inside a semi-transparent white packaging with a reclosable cover. This package is also useful to store screws and springs.
Presently, the buffer is provided with only one standard type spring, but the company is going to produce a set of springs of different poundage (also for the .300 AAC Blackout and for Subsonic Cartridges of this caliber).
The Company is testing a variant of this product with an adjustable spring for the most disparate requirements without changing the components of the buffer itself.
Maybe,we can also expect (one day) some new types of buffers (composed of different types of springs) for all the family of AR-15 Platform (and of course…for the .308 Winchester).
We tested the buffer in a 12.5-inch barrel NEA-15 (North Estern Arms) both with 5.56mm caliber and 300 Blackout. With the 5,56mm we shot commercial cartridges ( Made by Sellier e Bellot) with 55 Grain bullet (Full Metal Jacket) and Fiocchi 55 Grain FMJ bullet.
With the .300 AAC Blackout we shot some reloading cartridges with a S&B FMJBT bullet of 147 Grains…therefore a supersonic charge!
After more than 200 rounds with both calibers (shot in rapid fire and static shooting), we had no problem and we didn’t heard any metallic sound from the internal buffer spring. We tried also some subsonic cartridges with 208 Grain Bullet and, in some cases, the Hold Open did not work (also with the original buffer of the rifle) so … with this particular reloaded ammunition we are sure to assert that there were no problems with the rifle or the two buffers.
We’ll be very happy to test the new set of springs of different poundage when they will be available!
The ”Whispering Spring” can be purchased directly from MATEBA ITALIA Website for 90 Euros. The price is a little bit more higher compared to the other buffers for the AR.15 platform but it’s worth it!
We want to remember that the buffer can be calibrated by adjusting the spring of the buffer itself.
